Allison’s Piece 1992
In the summer of 1992 I had the great good fortune
to take a course with the Italian Glassmaster Pino Signoretto at the
Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State. Pino is an amazing hot glass
sculptor, he routinely works with masses of molten moving glass weighing
over 100 pounds. I watched him create a piece in two hours. It was of a
man from a Greek legend chained to the rocks. It was about a foot and a
half tall and you could see everything. The chains, the muscles straining,
hands, eyes, genitalia, all in perfect detail, all in hot glass using only
his hand tools and assistants bringing him ‘bits’ of molten glass to add
to the sculpture. I have never seen anything like it. I visited his studio
in Murano, Italy. I was amazed by the variety of his work. Like Lino, Pino
is considered to be one of the greats.
So, I should say that I am a bit odd (like this is news)
I love pregnant women. I think that they look so good. The full round form
of the belly, distended with new life, is such an amazing sight. I made
this for my girl friend at the time, a woman who is now my wife, Allison.
She doesn’t show this to many people, I was amazed when she offered it for
this show.
In case you were wondering, Joanne and I had split up on
a personal level in the spring of ’92, although we had kept the business
together.
