The Brava Project
![]() |
This all started at the end of June with a phone call. I was told that this interior design company had a Client that wanted a hot glass sculpture installed in a new building that they were working on. The Client had seen a piece by Chihuly, (this is always a danger sign) and while he did not want something exactly the same. (nor at the same price Dale charges) he did want something large and cheap, um, I mean inexpensive. This is the picture of Dales installation that they sent me, it is in the Oklahoma City Art Gallery. |
| So I immediately call Rob Studer, he and his wife Beth own This is it. Rob is an amazing artist, he and I have worked together on a number of projects over the years. It is always a challenge and always interesting. So we discuss the possibilities and decide that the only way we were going to get any scale would be to pull cane. Cane oe canne in Italian is simply long rods of glass. We would notch these rods at one end so the we could suspend them ans we deliberately put in predetermined curves so that each piece would have a graceful arc. | |
| I would get several large gathers of glassand Leah would bring me a blob of colour that was applied toone spot on the outside of the glass. | |
| Mitch would get another tool called a Post, it is a steel tube with
a disk of steel at one end. The glass that I have gets stuck onto it.
Brian made this Post tool special for me, Thanks Brian!!!

| We carefully pull the glass out so it doesn't get too thin or too thick. Then we let it sag into the desired curve. The glass rod is then snapped off at both ends and the broken ends are flame polished. |
